Method Man, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon just dropped "Our Dreams," the official lead single to their highly-anticipated, Wu-Stan-baiting collaboration Wu-Massacre, which drops March 30. Sam was going to do a blog post about it, and I was going to do a blog post about it. But once we started talking about it on IM, we decided to post our conversation here. What follows is a very rough analysis of the latest Wu-banger.
SamChennault 4:53 pm
(4:54:19 PM): what's the new rae/meth single called?
Mosi Reeves 4:54 pm
(4:54:25 PM): "Our Dreams"
SamChennault 4:54 pm
(4:54:34 PM): any good?
Mosi Reeves 4:54 pm
(4:54:41 PM): The RZA production sounds like Madlib
(4:54:53 PM): You can tell he put it together really quick
(4:55:15 PM): I'm afraid the album will be like "Iron Flag," just thrown together
SamChennault 4:55 pm
(4:55:31 PM): iron flag was pretty dope
Mosi Reeves 4:55 pm
(4:55:37 PM): Really?!
SamChennault 4:55 pm
(4:55:45 PM): u serious?
Mosi Reeves 4:55 pm
(4:55:55 PM): Ehh, I thought it wasn't that good
(4:56:06 PM): "Rules" was dope
SamChennault 4:56 pm
(4:56:09 PM): oh..nevermind...i was thinking ironman...lol
(4:56:22 PM): ironman is dope!
Mosi Reeves 4:56 pm
(4:56:28 PM): "Ironman" was a great album
SamChennault 4:56 pm
(4:56:30 PM): iron flag, not so much
SamChennault 4:58 pm
(4:58:18 PM): yeah, this "our dreams" song is kinda weak
SamChennault 5:03 pm
(5:03:44 PM): i might do a post on this new rae single
(5:03:55 PM): just asking "what is this s***t?" it's really bad.
MosiReeves 5:04 pm
(5:04:11 PM): I didn't think it was that bad. I didn't like the chorus, though
SamChennault 5:04 pm
(5:04:25 PM): it's pretty horrible to my ears
MosiReeves 5:04 pm
(5:04:59 PM): I think if you cut out the chorus it's all right
SamChennault 5:05 pm
(5:05:15 PM): the verses are pretty bad, especially ghost's
MosiReeves 5:05 pm
(5:05:22 PM): It's definitely on some grown-rapper s***. No "cooking in the kitchen with the baking soda" type rhymes
MosiReeves 5:06 pm
(5:06:01 PM): Yeah, the verses weren't great, but they were passable
(5:06:35 PM): I guess I liked the honesty of it. They were basically just rapping about their wives. No Wu-Tang fantasies
SamChennault 5:07 pm
(5:07:13 PM): i don't think that the wu needs to be rhyming about cooking in the kitchen with the baking soda to be great, but this just feels like really tepid.
MosiReeves 5:09 pm
(5:09:39 PM): Well, it's kinda like "Iron Flag," right...mediocre, but not necessarily horrible
(5:09:54 PM): It's horrible for the Wu because they've set such high standards
SamChennault 5:10 pm
(5:10:36 PM): there's a big space between rapping about "cooking in the kitchen with baking soda" and chronicling the minutia of domestic bliss.
MosiReeves 5:11 pm
(5:11:21 PM): Right, but that's what's interesting about the song to me. I mean, the writing isn't very good, but they're all talking about the ups and downs of relationships
SamChennault 5:12 pm
(5:12:49 PM): yeah, but the wu tang have done love songs before and done them well. at least ghostface has. but this just feels really corny. there's no urgency to it. and, regardless of what they rap about, a wu track does need a certain sense of urgency to make it successful, i think.
MosiReeves 5:13 pm
(5:13:20 PM): Yeah, it does sound kinda lazy
MosiReeves 5:13 pm
(5:13:48 PM): That's what happens when you float the idea of doing a collabo album and a world of fanboys start harassing you about it
SamChennault 5:14 pm
(5:14:33 PM): yeah...i mean, part of this is an expectations game...the idea of ghost, meth and rae doing an album together was pretty damn enticing, even in 2010, and their first single is this?
MosiReeves 5:14 pm
(5:14:57 PM): Well, the leak was "Criminology Vol. 2"
SamChennault 5:15 pm
(5:15:49 PM): i guess that they figured that since it was a michael jackson sample, our dreams might stand a chance of capturing some mainstream love.
(5:16:26 PM): and that's been the downfall of a lot of wu releases (especially ghost's more recent stuff), this idea that they could still take on the mainstream somehow.
MosiReeves 5:16 pm
(5:16:32 PM): But I don't think they could really deliver on those expectations. It took Raekwon over five years to finish his album. "Fishscale" was over four years ago. And Method Man hasn't delivered a decent album in years. I'm sorry, because I know you liked it, but "Blackout! 2" was weak sauce
SamChennault 5:16 pm
(5:16:53 PM): blackout 2 didn't age well
MosiReeves 5:17 pm
(5:17:05 PM): It was a one-listen wonder!
SamChennault 5:17 pm
(5:17:06 PM): i don't think i've listened to it since about a month after it came out
(5:17:08 PM): yeah
(5:17:43 PM): and they've been screaming "the wu is back" for like a half decade now. eventually, people are going to lose faith.
MosiReeves 5:18 pm
(5:18:21 PM): Well, when you think about it, they haven't done too bad. "Cuban Linx 2" and "Fishscale" in four years
(5:18:41 PM): Plus add the Wu album and "Big Doe Rehab," which were decent if not great
(5:18:55 PM): So four interesting albums in four years isn't bad
SamChennault 5:19 pm
(5:19:03 PM): i really liked 8 diagrams
(5:19:08 PM): i know i'm in the minority there
MosiReeves 5:19 pm
(5:19:19 PM): I still haven't listened to it yet!
SamChennault 5:19 pm
(5:19:23 PM): ha
