Cha-cha-Changes: The Brand Damn New Rhapsody

rhap_logo575x225.jpg

As you may have noticed from our new header, Rhapsody’s got a spiffy new logo, one that’s more representative of what Rhapsody is, at heart: playful, musical and fun.

The new logo is tied to some big news about our company. Last week, after seven years as a part of RealNetworks, Rhapsody became a standalone company.

Don’t worry - we’re still called Rhapsody, we’re still based in Seattle, and our music programming team still enjoys the odd argument about the fine lines between post-modern pop and '00s alternative music.

More importantly, we’re still wildly passionate about music and about helping people enjoy millions of songs, wherever they find themselves. It’s something we’ve spent a lot of time on.

Since its launch waaaay back in 2001, Rhapsody has evolved from something you enjoy on your PC to a delight for your home stereo, your TV, your MP3 player, and, with last fall’s launch of our iPhone app, your mobile phone.

This morning, we’re introducing a new subscription offering, Rhapsody Premier, that gives you access to Rhapsody from any of those places (or all of them!) for one low price: $10 a month.

Now, whether you’re streaming Rhapsody through a browser at work, listening through your Sonos at home, or enjoying it on your iPhone as you go for a jog, you can get all the music you want, anywhere.

Coinciding with Rhapsody’s new pricing, we’re also bringing the service to an even wider audience of mobile users with the release of our Rhapsody mobile app for the Android platform; you can read more about the app (which is available now for free through the Android Market) here. Check it out and let us know what you think.

I just tried to change my subscription status so that I could get the new lower pricing and was redirected to the trial signup page! Can you please make an effort to take care of your EXISTING customers first??

I just switched over my service to the new pricing scheme, even though I was charged $15 for my subscription yesterday. i chatted online with a service rep who said i would be charged 9.99 after the trial period, but i would be prorated for the 14.99 charge i received yesterday.

I encountered the same issue that Jake mentions above. I am simply re-directed to the initial sign up page. Doesn't seem like anyone wants us to get the discount...

@Jake: Yeah, I was a little confused about that too. It appears that as an existing customer, you just re-sign up for the trial period and then you're onto the 9.99 plan after 14 days, so you're getting 2 weeks free. What does this mean if you just paid your monthly subscription? I guess Rhapsody wants you to wait until the last day it runs out for you to re-sign up (to take advantage of the two weeks).

I agree though, Rhapsody, you should worry about your existing loyal customers first and make it easier and clearer (I tried to just change the subscription and was re-directed to the signup page). Were you planning just to keep overbilling your existing customers until they realized they could be saving $5.00? Seems very sneaky and not a great way to treat your PAYING customers.

Thanks,

Matt

Love it. Congrats, guys.

Hey Jake, go ahead and enter the free trial page and then select to login to an existing accounting rather than creating a new account. Once you agree to the payment info and free 14 day trial, it will automatically start your Premium account subscription and apply a credit for the remainder of your current subscription. That was what just happened for me when I tried it. Takes a leap of faith to go that route, but I checked the credit link afterward and it was there.

I followed Brian's advice and changed my account and was credited the difference. It is a shame that I needed to see this blog from a link on their Facebook page to do so instead of being informed by Rhapsody directly.

I just tried following the directions posted here, but in my case, I was told I had already had a free trial period and was given the option to sign up for the premium subscription - again - which I did. The account information is showing the new lower rate, but I'm not seeing a credit for the difference between the new rate and the old one which I paid 3/26. My credit card is not yet showing a second charge for this month, but it appears from the rhapsody billing history that I've been charged. I'd suggest waiting for further information from rhapsody before trying a switch.

It appears that I'm an idiot. Looking more closely at my billing history, I looks like rhapsody reduced this month's charge to $12.99, which I guess might reflect the pro-rated reduction. I'm not sure if I signed up for a new subscription or what. :D

I'm confused. It looks like the only difference is that the $10 plan adds 1 offline player license. In order to keep your 3-player "ToGo" plan you are still at the $15 point. Am I wrong?

Never never begin a blog post with Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes. I don't care if you are a music company. So trite. And way to cut off all your current customers. FAIL!
