The era of the celebrity DJ is on the wane. These days, the real big-tent tastemakers are music supervisors: the behind-the-scenes types with the knack for administering just the right dose of Snow Patrol at the tear-jerking climax of a Grey's Anatomy episode. And no one does that better than Alex Patsavas, whose keen ears and bursting Rolodex have put their sonic stamp on Grey's Anatomy, The O.C., Gossip Girl, and a little yarn about vampires called Twilight, whose soundtrack went on to sell 2.2 million copies.
Having sharpened his teeth with an album that included underground darlings like Iron and Wine and the Black Ghosts alongside megastars Muse and Linkin Park, Patsavas drinks deeply from the indie-rock vein with his selections for New Moon. Last week Stephenie Meyer, author of the best-selling novels behind the films, announced the sequel's soundtrack on her blog. The track listing offers a who's who of both yielding sensitivity and kohl-eyed cool, featuring artists like Death Cab for Cutie, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Killers, all experts in nocturnal angst. (Not to mention OK Go, whose superhuman stamina on the treadmill suggests that they might actually be vampires themselves.)
Perhaps we shouldn't give all the credit to Patsavas: after all, Meyer herself is an avowed fan of left-of-field faves like Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, and the latter turn up on New Moon with a new song, "Slow Life." While Brooklynites may be scratching their rumpled heads over that one, it's not the only surprise on the album. Radiohead's Thom Yorke makes a rare appearance, as do the folksy Bon Iver and St. Vincent, teaming up in an even rarer duet performance. Even hardcore indie insiders may be unfamiliar with Hurricane Bells, aka Longwave's Steve Schlitz, who until just a few weeks ago was still flying in stealth mode, as he told EW.com in a hastily arranged interview.
The New Moon soundtrack comes out October 20, a month before the film hits theaters nationwide. See below for the track listing.
