Attack Attack's Playlist

attackattack.jpg They may have covered Katy Perry's ubiquitous "I Kissed a Girl," but the Ohio synth-core band is not just another pop culture-fueled blur in the metal/post-hardcore scene. Attack Attack mix heavy guitars and technical drums with electronics and Auto-Tune into an unorthodox clashing of styles that works so well it's being heralded as the next big thing in Warped Tour circles. Check out what drummer Andrew Wetzel cites as "stuff I've listened to that's changed the way I've played from middle school up until now." That "stuff" includes heavy bands Necrophagist and Job for a Cowboy, along with rock acts like Muse and Saosin.

Necrophagist, "Stab Wound"
"This is one of the first bands that I ever really got into and "Stab Wound" is the first song I ever really heard where I was like, 'oh my god, people can actually play drums like this? That's unreal!'"

Job For a Cowboy, "Entities"
"The second band I really got into was Job For a Cowboy, and particularly in the song "Entities" the drummer does this ridiculous gravity blast that's unreal."

Suicide Silence, "No Pity For a Coward"
"Our guitarist Andrew [Whiting] and I got really into Suicide Silence and "No Pity For a Coward" was our jam for so long. Suicide Silence is just epically heavy, and there's that break down in the middle -- that really, ridiculously heavy break down, and Whiting and I are really into breakdowns so it just caught our attention."

Whitechapel, "Possesion"
"This song is just frickin' awesome. I like how everything's in super odd time signatures and it's just a challenge as a musician to try to follow them and figure out how that became their style. And their drummer is incredible also, so that works for me; the drumming for a band is usually my gateway for getting into that band."

Oceano, "District of Misery"
"Sort of a newer band, and their drummer is incredible. They went to Foundation Recording Studio where we recorded our album, so the dude [Joey Sturgis] that produced our album produced this one, and when all of us in the band listen to this, we can hear stuff that Joey put into that album, but on top of that they are unbelievably brutal."

A Plea For Purging, "Holocausts"
"These guys, I've known about them for a while, and over Christmas we went to go hang out with our producer Joey [Sturgis] and he was like dude, you gotta check [this] out and we were listening to it and were like, dude this is unreal. I got the record, and the whole thing is just unbelievable. I really feel like nu metal is starting to leach back into music now and is starting to become a bigger focus with a lot of heavier bands."

Impending Doom, "More Than Conquerors"
"John [Halgado] and I stumbled across Impending Doom's new record, and the last half of this song is absolutely incredibly heavy. It's just a super destroy everything kind of moment in the song, and all of us jam out to that super hard and punch stuff -- it's really funny."

Muse, "Stockholm Syndrome"
"Metal and hardcore is what really got me into music, but Muse - their album Absolution is just incredible; it's epic, really. "Stockholm Syndrome" is one of my favorite songs off of that album, and also their drummer is left-handed which is really cool. The biggest thing about Muse for me is that all of them are amazing musicians and everything about their music is so well thought out and put together -- everything in that record was put there for a reason."

From First to Last, "Mothersound"
"I don't know if I'm the only person I even know of that has the From First to Last record Heroine let alone even likes it (laughs), but I really enjoyed that record -- I listened to that thing for like a whole year. That whole record just sounds super raw, just everything about it. Sonny's vocals are just really raw, the drum samples are real dirty, and there's nothing real complicated, it's just straight music -- I don't even know how to explain it but "Mothersound" is one of my favorite songs off of it."

Saosin, "It's Far Better to Learn"
"Another really big band that influenced me is Saosin. Their self-titled record was a really sweet record. I really loved the vocals on that record, not to mention the fact that their drummer is really awesome too. I think the biggest thing is that their drummer - it doesn't matter what he's playing, you know it's him because he has a really specific style of how he plays the drums: how he arranges certain parts, certain fills and the way things lead into each other while he's playing. And that's one of the things I've gotten into recently, I love listening to how drummers play drums, and how you can easily distinguish one drummer from the next just by little tiny things: little habits, the way they set up fills, just that there's a whole 'nother universe to playing drums than just where the kick and the snare goes."

Oh, Sleeper, "Vices Like Vipers"
"I started listening to Oh, Sleeper a little bit and I really liked [this] song. And most of that is the way the drummer and the guitar players do a lot of interaction between the guitars and the double bass, and it's a pretty catch song on top of that."

Our Last Night, "Timing is Everything"
"We got to know these guys pretty well and they're going out with us in the fall. John and I got turned on to their record and our favorite song off of that record is "Timing is Everything." There's just something about that song and the way its put together that just reminds us all of home, so when we're on the road we'll just be jamming this song. When we were literally on our way home we were playing this song, and everyone was super pumped and freaking out like, 'dude we're going home YEAH!' It's just one of those songs that really gets a hold of you. And a lot of it has to do with the fact that we know those guys, when you know the musicians on the record, it makes it that much more enjoyable."
