Post-hardcore stalwarts Hot Water Music -- Chuck Ragan (vocals/guitar), Chris Wollard (vocals/guitar), Jason Black (bass) and George Rebelo (drums) -- have done their share of touring. So when we asked them to pick a theme for this playlist, we can’t say we were surprised they wanted to go with favorite driving tunes. This couldn't be more appropriate as the recently reunited group (they broke up for a year and a half) ready themselves to hit the road once again. Check out the band's choice cuts for the open road. Wilco, "Passenger Side"
George Rebelo: "I don't drive at all on tour, but I do sit shotgun for most of the trip."
Iron Maiden, "2 Minutes to Midnight"
Rebelo: "This
tune always reminds me of being a kid in my basement, daydreaming of
becoming a pro drummer. On these long drives, sometimes you need some
reminder of why you still like getting in a van with 4 other grown men
and sleeping on floors at a shitty hotel."
Afghan Whigs, "Gentlemen"
Rebelo: "This song will get you going when you're tired and need a little bit of a boost. This song gets me everytime."
Son Volt, "Tear Stained Eye"
Chris Wollard: "Trace has been played too many times to count in our van. Possibly the best driving album ever."
Paul Kelly, "To Her Door"
Wollard: "His
greatest hits album is amazing. I can't stop listening to it.
Australian and awesome. Really great storytelling helps me zone out on
the road."
Muddy Waters, "Deep Down in Florida"
Wollard: "It's Muddy and he's singing about Gainesville ..."
Calexico, "Sunken Waltz"
Wollard: "Calexico is the perfect band to listen to when you get woken up in the van to take over driving on the dawn patrol. Feast of Wire is my favorite album of theirs lately. It's all really good, though."
Creedance Clearwater Revival, "Down on the Corner"
Chuck Ragan: "I
heard CCR for the first time at [my friend's] house in Lafayette, Louisiana.
My buddy's dad would crank it out in the carport while he built us a
lot of our skateboard ramps. When I hear this song, I picture him with
his bags on, hammer in his hand, and sometimes a beer in the other,
working and singing. He was a hard worker and it was the first time I
related hard work with good music. From there, I've enjoyed CCR, as well
as all of us from time to time when it's right to bring out some good
old driving songs."
Leatherface, "Colorado Joe/Leningrad Vlad"
Ragan: "If I'm not mistaken, 'Leningrad Vlad' was the first Leatherface song we had ever heard. Played to us off of Cherry Knowle by
Pat Hughes on his porch. I think we were all floored. From that moment
on, that band became a vital torch light for us through it all. From
the music itself, to the poetry in the lyrics, to the camaraderie with
a group that we loved but thought we would never see or meet. It still
amazes me."
Pegboy, "Field of Darkness"
Ragan: "This
was a band that affected us all in one way or the other, all from young
ages. This is one of those records that doesn't seem that it will ever
grow old to me -- as well as being one of the few that is played from
start to finish at any given time."
Quicksand, "Fazer"
Ragan: "From the first time I ever heard those tom [drums] that open up the record Slip, I
was drawn and reformed as a musician and a writer. The majority of my
friends in music could say pretty much the same thing. This is a record
that can make somebody yearn to analyze beats and rhythms as well as
solid catchy riffs and melodies -- if it hits you as hard as it hit us at
least. This record affected us all in a huge way, from alone in our
rooms or together on the highway. It's traveled the world with us and
most likely will continue to do so for many more years to come."
Seaweed, "Kid Candy"
Jason Black: "Now, here's a band that people should be stoked about getting the chance to see play again!"
The Replacements, "Never Mind"
Black: "Westerberg has that uncanny knack of writing specifically to you, the listener."
Jawbox, "Static"
Black: "The first song/band that I actually obsessed about."
Bob Marley, "Is This Love"
Black: "My favorite Bob, without a doubt."
